Why I Built Canticle

Planning worship music isn't scheduling. It's curation.

It's knowing your congregation, the liturgical season, your choir's strengths, and what will carry the text. It's balancing the familiar with the fresh. It's craft.

I spent 12 years doing this work—as an organist and choirmaster at St. Paul's Episcopal in Akron, St. James Anglican in Cleveland, St. Peter's Episcopal in Charlotte, and now Holy Trinity in Covina. I've planned Advent services at 11pm on a Tuesday and dug through filing cabinets looking for "that anthem we did three Easters ago."

When I became a software engineer, I realized: the tools we use don't match the care we put in. Canticle is my answer—software that handles the logistics so you can focus on the music.

Garrett LawGarrett Law is the founder of Canticle. He holds a Master of Music in Organ Performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music and a Graduate Certificate in Historical Performance Practice from Case Western Reserve University. Over 12 years, he served as organist and choirmaster at parishes including St. Paul's Episcopal (Akron), St. James Anglican (Cleveland), and St. Peter's Episcopal (Charlotte), where he was also Assistant Director of the Charlotte Choir School. He is currently organist at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Covina, CA, and a software engineer in Los Angeles.
